BRIDGES
When a tooth is lost or missing, a bridge is often recommended. A bridge is a non-removable prosthesis, anchored to the neighboring teeth and replaces one or more missing teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced by bridgework, the teeth on either side of the missing one are prepared as crowns to serve as abutments, or anchor teeth, to hold the replacement tooth in place. Without the use of a bridge, spaces in the mouth from missing teeth can cause multiple teeth to shift and drift and lead to occlusion (biting) and/or jaw problems and may cause periodontal (gum) disease.
In cases of missing teeth, Implants may also be recommended as the most appropriate choice. Both bridges and Implants serve a wonderful purpose to safeguard the integrity of existing teeth and help maintain a healthy, vibrant smile.
